‘Easiest’ and ‘most efficient’ way to clean the entire washing machine

Jun 26, 2023

It is extremely important to keep on top of washing machine maintenance, which includes cleaning it often. Without cleaning the appliance, laundry may not be as fresh as you want it, or bad odours may be coming from the machine. Karren Barrigan, cleaning expert at Housetastic.co.uk, explained how to clean all elements, including the drum, drawer and filter.

She explained: “The easiest and most efficient way to clean a washing machine drum is to put on an empty cycle.

“To do this, add a little bit of washing detergent directly into the drum, and hot wash on around 60C.

“Try to put the cycle on the hottest wash possible by your appliance, in order to kill germs, and remove any build-up and limescale.”

Britons could also try a scoop of baking soda in the drum, followed by some white vinegar in the detergent drawer.

Once the cycle is over, make sure to go in and give the drawer a good clean as it can often build up with leftover fabric softeners and detergent.

Karren added: “Due to the drawer always being shut, old detergent can stay moist for long periods of time which can eventually lead to mould.

“Putting on a cycle with a mouldy drawer can lead to bad bacteria and odours on our clothing.

“Ensure you regularly maintain the drawer by removing it and scrubbing with an old toothbrush and some regular cleaner, or washing up liquid.

“Make sure you scrub inside the cavity of the drawer too, as old debris can often be hiding out of sight. Give the drawer a quick rinse before reinstalling it and you’re good to go.”

If you don’t know how to completely remove the washing machine drawer, refer to the manufacturer’s instructions as it can differ between machines.

After these areas are pristine, it’s time to clean the filter, which is located at the bottom of the machine.

Despite being one of the most important areas to clean, it is often the one which is forgotten because it tends to hide behind a little flap.

The role of the filter is to prevent fibres and dirt from ending up in the pump, and it also collects various items from the clothing, such as small coins or hair clips.

The cleaning expert said: “Due to this, and it also being a humid environment, it can become a breeding ground for bad bacteria and nasty smells.

“Ensure you regularly remove and empty the filter to remove all fibres and items that have gathered within it.

“To do so, first locate your filter. Usually, the filter is located along the bottom of the machine, however, check your manual if you’re unsure on where to find it.”

To drain it, place a bowl or towel underneath the drain tube and then unscrew the filter to release it. It often needs to be turned to the left and then pulled out, but refer to the manufacturer’s instructions if you are unsure.

Karren noted: “Empty the filter and allow any trapped dirt and water to escape - lay down a towel if needed.

“Give the cavity once over with a cloth to remove any excess and then replace the filter and cover.”

Make sure to clean these three areas at least every couple of months to maintain good hygiene and ensure the machine works to the best of its ability.
